Happy Monday, another week begins. I received my second COVID vaccination last Friday, thanks to an amazing effort by the new administration. I don’t even want to speculate on where things would be if the Idiot’s Inch Erection, Oops, I mean Idiot’s Insurrection, had succeeded. Then the effort to vaccinate the country (as well as the entire globe) could be measured in years instead of months.
I was quite impressed by the well-organized administration of the vaccine. It’s a colossal task that from my experience, is being carried out remarkably well. It’s my hope this effort will be an example to prove that good government CAN accomplish necessary goals. Perhaps we can hope for a new, more active stretch of government advancements in citizen’s rights and infrastructure. . I’m not encouraged to see that Republicans are still pushing their pack of big lies and attempting to, basically, keep the country in a state of instability. They don’t seem to have a strategy other than stopping any significant progress in the USA. And they’ve done a pretty competent job at propagandizing their base. The optimistic hope is in the fact that most former sane and honest Republicans are now supporters of the new administration. We still have the crazies to deal with.
I spoke to 2 people I know this week who always seemed sensible, who both told me no way am I getting that vaccination! I replied that even if you’re not nervous about becoming ill yourself, shouldn’t you do it to protect the overall population? One told me they never get any vaccinations, including flu shots. Okay, I admit to never having a flu shot. But I had the flu probably 8 or 9 times as a child and never again since. It’s a little different situation. Try to convince skeptics using the example of smallpox and you’ll probably get blank stares. I mean make up your mind. I was under the impression their Feckless Leader was all for herd immunity. I guess they’re just for herd mentality!
Another Monday morning is upon us and for the first time in quite awhile there’s a bit of hope out there. From a personal perspective, I will get my second vax this Friday. So I will actually be able to begin to think about life returning, at least to some degree, to some resemblance to normality. Whatever that means.
Looking at the bigger picture it appears that everyone can start to plan their vaccination soon and that we might even have a real summer this year. What should occur is a carefully calibrated reversion to old habits and practices, such as dining in public, attending shows, bars, public gatherings in general. Will people continue to wear masks and avoid close contact, or will they cease all public health measures and return to old habits that have now been proven to be unsafe?
Human nature and history show that more than likely many people will be too exhausted and impatient to continue practicing sensible precautions. There will probably be another spike in infections before this is over. That will happen out of a combination of simple ignorance, but also the malignant after effects of the lying weasel former guy and his treasonous enabling henchmen.
This is why it is not advisable to forgive and forget. We are dealing with traitors in our midst who tried to overthrow the government (as flawed as it is) who now pretend to repent for their sins. But just like the gutless unprincipled thugs they are, they will attempt to use the very system they tried to overthrow to extricate themselves from their seditious actions. They will obfuscate, prevaricate, plead whimper whine and complain that they are being treated unfairly.
Too bad so sad. They broke the law. Follow the evidence ALL THE WAY up the chain and toss all the traitors in jail. That’s where they belong due to their own stupid foolish idiotic acts of insurrection. Page 6 of On The Fence, which originates at onthefencecomic.com.
Good morning, I hope everyone had a safe and happy weekend! It appears that Congress is slowly but surely working on getting assistance out to Americans and ramping up the vaccinations. The criticisms are already flying but just imagine where we would be if “former guy” was still nominally in control. Personally I can’t complain as I was able to make a vaccination appointment last Thursday and I got my first dose Friday morning. To encourage everyone to keep up their viral vigilance for just a bit longer are my friends the Sturgeon General and the Frickin’ Chicken.
This was the first time in a year I was in a room with a (socially distanced) crowd of hundreds of folks. But it was all perfectly planned out, well organized and administered in an impressive manner. It’s the difference between night and day showing how competent government can accomplish goals as compared to an administration of prevaricating greedy weasels. My arm was sore and I experienced a slight headache but otherwise there were no reactions.
Though I will continue to anticipate better things as the country moves forward towards the resolution of the crisis of this past year, there is still a hard core of opposition determined to block any sensible progress out of sheer ideological spite. The problem is their ideology consists of the worship of a lying traitor and to surrender all rationality to conspiracy theories. And those are our neighbors.
I hope you enjoy the cartoon, I will post page 6 next Monday. Stay well and have a great week!
We made it out of Trumpocalypse but only after losing a half million fellow citizens. Though this pandemic would have been met better by any other imaginable administration, the MAGA minions are still out there all over this country, waiting on the lying words of their Feckless Leader.
I find it hard to understand how after the last 4 years, and especially the last total disaster of year, that the “former guy” has any supporters left at all. Those who don’t immediately see that he’s lying whenever he speaks or that the economy wouldn’t be a mess if there had been a competent reaction to the pandemic? I don’t get it.
People who are willing to travel across the country and attempt to overthrow the government because an obvious liar lied to them? People who believe baby trafficking pedophile cannibals are in control and the Republicans are the (literally) lily white good guy saviors of the USA? Wow. Yes I believe there are some truly evil super rich (erstwhile friends of Jeffery) in this country. But come on let’s get real.
We can’t forget those conspiracy believing pawns still exist in every neighborhood and that they must be stopped. Whether by education, or if necessary, prison, but the violent insurrectionists are awaiting their orders and have to be dealt with. Oh and by the way, he lost and he’s history.
Last week I got some blow back from people who strenuously disagreed with my comment that I believe my generation, the Boomers, weren’t particularly good socially responsible stewards of this society. That was probably a combination of my failure to clearly explain my meaning and a tendency of some people to over react. Whoa there Gramps, slow down, don’t hyperventilate, you might fall down and break a hip!
I was raised in Dearborn MI, World Headquarters for Ford and home to their white employees, Black people were not allowed to live there. Mayor for 36 years, Orville Hubbard, was a famous segregationist who kept the city White. As far back as I remember, I was disgusted by that truly ugly man. The City Services and school system were top notch, so you could say I was raised in a Trumpist’s heaven.
My earliest inklings re the incorrigible element amongst my peers was in school, where I noticed a large plurality of the students didn’t listen, didn’t care that they were being given the gift of a very good education, insulted the teacher, threw spitballs at her when her back was turned, etc etc. Don’t get me wrong, I was quite a trouble maker myself, but I was respectful and always earned good grades. By high school, it was my few friends, the “dirty hippie dogs”, pitted against the majority, the “greasers” and the “jocks”, who delighted in ganging up on the hippies whenever possible.
At that time I attended the first Earth Day march and many Anti war demonstrations. I also developed my life long belief that finding a profession where I was able to make a positive contribution (and a steady paycheck) was much more important that pursuing big bucks. Cut to the eighties, the country had actually seemed to be bending in the right direction, until Reagan and the Greed is Good ethic took precedence. I was working on the GM auto assembly line, where I was offered a supervisor’s job. I turned it down because even back then I was a strong critic of corporate power who told people all the time that the country was headed in the wrong direction. In fact I still have my DIE YUPPIE SCUM T-shirt. Then management offered me an artist job, doing graphics, posters and such for the plant. To their astonishment I set two conditions before accepting the position (they believed people would sell their soul to get off the line). I agreed to take the job as long as I was not asked to do any promotions or marketing, and to get photos of the work I produced. I remained in that job for eleven years, that is until the Bush family pressured GM to cease operations in that plant (that’s another story).
So the point of all this is to respond to those who last week accused me of being an “ageist” and biased against the Boomers. First, it’s weird to call somebody an “ageist” who left a good paying graphic design job, with 27 years experience and a very good portfolio, in 2008 when I relocated to the West coast, and was then denied even an interview for many jobs equivalent to past experience. Ageism may be hard to prove but it’s fairly obvious when it’s staring you in the face. And if you want to accuse me of Boomer bashing, that’s a misunderstanding. I’ve been a vocal critic of corporate control and right wing greed for most of my life. I’ve turned down many jobs for ideological reasons while struggling to raise a family. The right wing has repeatedly obstructed any meaningful progress for as many citizens as possible, in favor of catering to the super rich. Now I’ve always believed that “For evil to triumph all that is necessary is for good men to do nothing”. Also Bernie Sanders has stolen my line that we need to put “People before Profits” (actually i believe Noam Chomsky said it first).
It’s hard to dispute that this country turned to the wrong direction right about when Boomers came into positions of influence. I’m open to discussion about that “coincidence” any time. Any educated person knows that ancient Roman writers complained about the younger generation going to hell and I imagine young cavemen gave the older cavedudes grief around the nightly campfire. So I’m not dumb enough to make a blanket accusation against EVERY member of a generation. The reality is that in every generation the majority is not politically involved on a regular basis. A minority on the left and right have always been active while the rest are preoccupied with their daily lives. So no serious person would condemn an entire generation. But I’m speaking to those fascist enablers on the right and those progressives such as myself that, as my handle on Dkos.com indicates, “You’re either part of the problem or PartOfTheSolution.”
I fully understand that most people will never work for change but as a member of the Boomers I am not ready to ignore the profound damage done to our society especially in the last four years. I have always thought involved citizens should try to make a positive contribution using their abilities and/or resources. Some people feel they owe society nothing which goes against what I was taught to be the responsibilities of citizens of a Democratic Republic. It’s a free country, anyone is free to disagree with me. As a graphic designer, critiques have been a daily part of my job, and criticism helps to improve job performance. So I’m pretty impervious to criticism. But I don’t have to accept uneducated opinions, and anyone who wants to characterize me with simpleminded insults, well I don’t listen to you. Have a great week, PLEASE SHARE if you like the comic, thanks!!
